Shipping the dahlia tubers
Rules for accepting the delivery and caring for the tubers
The dahlia tubers are fragile and sensitive. Transportation is therefore extremely strenuous for them and we do everything we can to ensure that they handle it as well as possible. To make sure that the tubers you have purchased will remain healthy, we need you to follow a few rules. These are also regulated in our Terms and conditions and compliance with them is a condition for the recognition of any claim.
- Accepting the delivery: Any dahlia shipment must be accepted as soon as possible, but no later than one day after the first delivery attempt. If you know that you will not be able to receive the shipment during next 10 days after you order, please, let us know, preferably directly in the order note. We will contact you and arrange a better date for the shipment.
- Unpacking and acclimatizing the tubers: Immediately after receiving the tubers, remove them from the packaging. Store them in a cool, slightly humid environment protected from the frost until the time of planting.
- Planting: Plant the tubers after your last frost date. If you want to give them a head start, you can plant them early in a heated hoophouse or greenhouse. Freshly planted and sprouting dahlias are a favorite prey for slugs and other pests. We therefore recommend using a slug deterrent. You can find more information about growing healthy dahlias on our blog.
- Plant health: We only sell the tubers produced by completely healthy plants. We also check all the tubers for any signs of disease just before shipping. Nevertheless, if you notice signs of a virus or other infection within two weeks of delivery, you can make a complaint using our complaint form. However, this guarantee does not apply if you have pinched the plants or taken cuttings during this period, as infection could also occur in this process.

- Preparing plants for shipping: For all orders that arrived from the previous Friday to Thursday, we will prepare the required number of plants, check their health and pinch the tops of their stems off. This step has several functions. Some of our plants are quite large and would fit our packaging without pinching. The plants transport will be easier without fragile young shoots, which could easily break. At the same time, pinching will encourage stronger root formation.
- Shipping date: We ship all dahlia orders on Monday afternoons, so that they reach you within one working week. We try to time the shipping so that the plants spend as little time in transport as possible and we do not hand them over to the carrier until late afternoon. Unless we agree otherwise with you, all orders received from Monday till Thursday will be shipped the following Monday, and orders received from Friday to Sunday will be shipped a week later.
